Bertrand Russell Today
£20 | 240 pages | Paperback | ISBN 9780851249742

Bertrand Russell Today poses searching questions. What will survive of Russell’s philosophy in 2172 CE? How impactful was Russell’s association with India over six decades? What does Russell’s longstanding engagement with Israel and neighbours in the Middle East, particularly Palestine, signify? How are Russell’s life and legacy appraised in his many obituaries? How does Russell assess Rousseau in the history of philosophy? How did facets of 20th century Analytic Philosophy bring new directions?
“The first (organizing) meeting of Bertrand Russell Society was held in New York City on February 8th, 9th and 10th, 1974. The society has two major objectives: to make Russell’s views better known, and to promote causes he believed in.” So writes Kenneth Blackwell, Honorary Russell Archivist at McMaster University, Canada, which holds Russell’s extensive papers. Founded with the cooperation of some dozen people from varied backgrounds, the Bertrand Russell Society primarily owed its establishment to its first President, Dr. Peter Cranford. Russell’s daughter, Katharine Tait, was a co-founder of the Society.
Half a century on, while celebrating the Bertrand Russell Society’s 50th anniversary, Bertrand Russell Today re-assesses why and how Russell’s work endures. The volume, edited by Jahnabi Deka, brings together students of Russell including Nilanjan Bhowmick, Andrew G. Bone, Mayank Bora, Landon D. C. Elkind, Gregory Landini, John R. Lenz, Timothy J. Madigan, Peter Stone and Thom Weidlich.
Bertrand Russell Today speaks to scholars and laypersons. The book encourages readers throughout the world to revisit Bertrand Russell and to join the Society that bears his name.
